Former India opener Virender Sehwag has lashed out at the Indian team management for their team selection for the 1st One Day International match against England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Tuesday, March 23. The batting great criticised the team-management after they dropped Yuzvendra Chahal from the playing eleven. Notably, Krunal Pandya and Prasidh Krishna earned the maiden ODI caps as well.

Chahal took part in the first three T20I matches of the five-match T20I series against England but he was not in his usual destructive form. In all three games, he was costly and also seen struggling in the middle to pick wickets as well. In two of the three games, he gave away more than 40 runs while in the other one, he conceded 34 runs as well and picked one wicket in each game.

While Chahal didn’t play during the last two T20Is as well as in the first ODI where India chose Kuldeep Yadav ahead of Chahal, Sehwag took a jibe on the selection committee and said that there was ‘partiality’ in selection when it comes to the bowlers in the team.

Virender Sehwag further gave the example of KL Rahul, who also failed to perform in the recently-concluded T20I series but still has been picked ahead of Rishabh Pant, who did quite well recently. However, Rahul didn’t feature in the final T20I and Sehwag compared his case to Chahal and referred to this as ‘partiality’ as well.

You snub bowlers after one game, but you gave 4 matches to KL Rahul then sat him out in the 5th game. So, if you give bowlers that many chances there will be poor games for them too. If this was [Jasprit] Bumrah and he had 4 moderate outings, will you have thought to exclude Bumrah as well? No, you would have said ‘he’s a good bowler, he will make a comeback,” Virender Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

Notably, KL Rahul has scored a fifty in the 1st ODI, remaining unbeaten at 62 off just 43 balls to help India put up a decent total of 317 for 5 in their allotted 50 overs.
