India captain Virat Kohli has supported Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane to do a great job in his absence as Kohli shared that the Indian team’s game has always been a collective effort which does not depend on individuals as well. It is also noteworthy that, Rahane will lead the team after the first Test, as he will return home for the birth of his first child with wife, Anushka Sharma.

“We’ve had a lot of mutual understanding and respect over the years, we’ve had great partnerships based on trust. Jinx has done a tremendous job in the tour games,” Kohli said in the pre-match press conference. “He’s very composed and knows the strengths of our team. Our cricket has been a collective effort of the whole team, it’s a cultural effort and not just about me strategising things and putting things in front of people. We already know the template we play with.”

He again shared that they are on the same page. However, he admitted that the focus will be to provide captaincy and leadership until he is with the team. And, he also believes that this is the time for him to step up and do well as an individual, as well as a captain also. However, the captain further added that a ‘pre-planned’ strategy for the pink-ball Test wouldn’t work as it has a lot of variables.

“I think you can have a fair idea on how you want to go about things, but I don’t think you can completely plan anything in Test cricket. It’s all about encountering and reacting to situations, understanding when you need to attack, when you need to defend, when you need to bat through the session. Start the session well, end it well,” he again explained.

Notably, India won the Test series last time when they travelled to Australia. Howveer, that term didn’t feature David Warner and Steve Smith as they were banned for their involvement in the ball-tampering scandal. However, this time, Warner has been ruled out of the first game due to injury and Smith suffered a back injury scare on Tuesday, before returning to the training on Wednesday as well.

“Our plans are pretty much sorted and ready for all the batsmen. We have to execute those plans consistently and efficiently to get those breakthroughs and dismiss them at the right times. We’re not focused on whether their players are going to start or not, we’re only focused on what we can do as a team,” Virat Kohli concluded.
