There have been a lot of talks lately regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future in T20 format ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup next year. The veteran players recently requested to be rested for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against South Africa and will play the two-match Test series in South Africa. This raises concerns over their selection in the squad for the coveted tournament next June.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, speaking to Star Sports, reckoned that the decision for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s selection in the T20 World Cup should be taken closer to the tournament.
“Who knows what’s in store in life? I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. I believe the approach should be extremely simple. We have played a lot of World Cups and haven’t been able to win them,” said Manjrekar.
According to Manjrekar, the squad for the coveted tournament should be picked based on players’ form close to the World Cup.
“We are maybe playing slightly different cricket in the final stages of World Cups. When something goes out of your hand, simplify it. Pick your team based on form close to the World Cup,” said Manjrekar.
Manjrekar emphasized the necessity for the star batter to produce in the IPL, saying it’s critical that Kohli continues to perform well in the game’s shortest format. Earlier in the year, Kohli found his form for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, scoring 639 runs with two hundreds. However, in the past, concerns regarding Kohli’s place in the team have been raised due to his strike rate, particularly following the powerplay against spin.
“Virat Kohli will have to show that he is a better option than the youngsters who are playing currently, and Rohit Sharma as T20 batter and captain vs Hardik Pandya, the T20 batter, all-rounder and captain,” said Manjrekar.
The last time Kohli and Rohit played a T20 International for India was in the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal match loss to England. With 296 runs, Kohli was the tournament’s top run getter. Even though Rohit didn’t have a spectacular tournament, his aggressive style in the recently concluded ODI World Cup makes him a strong candidate to return.
