Indian ace batter Virat Kohli relinquished captaincy nine months ago and his place in T20I squad is in jeopardy ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in October. On Wednesday, the national selectors picked the ODI squad for the three matches in the West Indies later this month. It has been noted that the team will be led by Shikhar Dhawan while Ravindra Jadeja will be the deputy. Regular all-format captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested.

Times of India reported that Rohit, Pant and Pandya are likely to travel to the Caribbean with the team for the subsequent five-match T20I series. However, for Kohli, his T20I future will depend on how his performance in the next 10 days in England in two T20Is and ODIs. If the sources are to be believed, the Indian team management and selectors are not clear on fitting Kohli in the T20I middle order.

“The T20I squad has been put on hold to evaluate the rest to be given to the top players. Rohit, Pant and Pandya are likely to play T20 matches in West Indies. Most likely, Bumrah will not travel to the Caribbean. As far as Kohli is concerned, it needs to be seen what the team management decides for the T20 World Cup. This limited-overs series in England is very important for Kohli,” a source said on Wednesday.

Kohli’s form has dipped substantially and has not been convincing across all formats. His struggle in T20 cricket also came to the fore in this year’s IPL. With India having many young and dynamic middle-order options in the form of Suryakumar Yadav, Pant, Pandya, Jadeja, Deepak Hooda, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer, Kohli could be behind in the race.
