Team India’s bowling scene has drastically changed in the last few years, and it has changed for the better, especially in the category of fast bowlers. Following the retirement of veterans such as Zaheer Khan,Rudra Pratap Singh and the legendary Javagal Srinath, the Men on Blue didn’t have much faith on the likes of Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma. But, the present scenario is different, and a confident and unruffled Kohli has an explanation.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah- the latter who is critically acclaimed to be one of the best, if not the best pacer in the sport, are the state of the art fast bowlers to help India regain its confidence, and captain Kohli’s statement does it justice.
“If you ask me, we are right at the top. I won’t even count ourselves in the top three. These guys deserve it. As a captain when we started off, I really wanted to see it happen,” he spoke to Times of India on Wednesday.
“Batting was never an issue; spin was never an issue. After Zak (Zaheer Khan) and all the stalwarts went away, we talked about how we could get back to the top, have the ability and the firepower to pick 20 wickets… it’s the belief that stands out.” the 31 year old told the interviewers.
Beating out Bangladesh 2-1 in the recent T20 series, Kohli hails his bowlers to have the abiloty to wipe out the batting order against whomever, wherever.
“Any kind of pitch, any kind of opposition, they believe they can get more out of the pitch than the opposition. That belief matters a lot. In fact, it is everything for a fast bowler”he added.
India, who are taking on Bangladesh again in the first phase of test series starting today, are trailing behind by 64 runs at the end of day one at Holkar Stadium, Indore.
