Team India’s experimentation stretched onto the series decider in Ahmedabad. In a major shuffle, it was Virat Kohli who opened the innings with Rohit Sharma in the absence of KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan. After a successful unbeaten outing, the Indian skipper revealed his plan to continue batting at the top of the order.

Speaking at the post-match presentation following India’s vital series win, Kohli revealed that he plans to open the batting for RCB as well in the upcoming edition of the IPL. The three-time finalists are currently thin with respect to their opening options due to the release of Aaron Finch and the absence of Josh Phillipe.

“I am going to open in the IPL as well. I have batted in different positions in the past,”

Kohli also added that he can afford to bat at the top alongside Rohit at the top because the middle order has found stability now. The presence of Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan adds a certain dynamic till the finishers come into play.

“But I feel we have a solid middle-order now. I would like to partner Rohit through to the 2021 World Cup. It’s about two best batsmen batting most balls. If anyone of us can stay on, we can cause a lot of damage. Other guys feel a lot more confident when one of us is still in and is set.”

Commenting about the marginal series win, man of the series Kohli lauded the players for a complete game.

“It was a complete game. Despite Rishabh and Iyer not getting a chance we managed to put on 225. It’s a testimony to our batting depth. Rohit and me were both positive in our intent. We knew we could trust each other and one of us can play second fiddle if one takes off,”

While India certainly have the pool of players to make a statement in the T20 World Cup, it also remains to be seen how the team sorts out the balance and the batting order.

The opening combination of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma leaves KL Rahul out in the cold along with Ishan Kishan. The stacked middle-order along with the inclusions of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, make India one of the favourites to win the trophy on their home soil.
