After announcing his decision to step down as Team India’s T20 captain, Virat Kohli could very well lose control over captaincy across all white-ball cricket if India fail to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup. The BCCI are reportedly unhappy with the way The Men In Blue have played the first two matches of the global event.
india are on the brink of elimination following heavy losses to Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stages. The culmination of the T20 World Cup will see a new era unfold with the current coaching staff departing from their roles. Rahul Dravid has been slated to take over the reins as the new head coach.
“The board is unhappy. And there is serious doubt over his (Virat) ODI captaincy now as well. But three games still left and if India, by any chance, manage to qualify and fight back in the tournament then the scenario could change. But, right now, if you ask me or anybody, Virat is doubtful as ODI captain,” a source said.
Virat Kohli was appointed as the ODI captain following MS Dhoni’s decision to step down from captaincy prior to the home series against England back in 2017. Since then, Kohli has led the team to two ICC ODI events, the Champions Trophy the very same year and the 2019 World Cup, where India fell short of silverware.
Too early to name anybody as a potential replacement for Kohli: Sources
The source added that even if the board makes the call to remove Kohli as the captain of the ODI team, it is still too early to predict who will take over. Rohit Sharma is touted to lead the T20 team after the World Cup, but he will have to wait since KL Rahul is likely to lead the team for the home series against New Zealand with the senior players resting.
“It is too early to name anybody, let the T20 World Cup get over. Rahul Dravid may also join the team as head coach soon. He will be discussed as well. Rohit or anybody else, or Virat continues, everything will be done afterwards. There are chances that India get one captain for T20 and ODI formats and one (Virat) for Tests,”
