Vinesh Phogat admitted to hospital after drastic measures were taken to reduce weight ahead of the final

Vinesh Phogat, the Indian wrestler, faced an intense battle not only on the mat but also off it. As she prepared for the gold medal match in the 53kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024, she had to shed weight rapidly to compete in a lower weight category.

Vinesh Phogat’s weight loss process

Wrestlers often participate in weight categories below their natural weight. This strategic move gives them an advantage against less strong opponents. The weight-cut process involves calculated restrictions on food and water, combined with sweating through exercises and sauna sessions leading up to the morning weigh-in.

However, this extreme weight loss can cause weakness and energy depletion, which is counterproductive for performance. Vinesh’s nutritionist calculated that she needed to lose approximately 1.5 kg. After the weigh-in, limited water and high-energy foods were provided to restore her energy levels. Sometimes, there’s a rebound in weight gain following competition.

Vinesh’s coach initiated the standard weight-cut process, confident that she would achieve the target. Unfortunately, Vinesh was found to be 100 grams over her 50 kg weight category, leading to her disqualification.

Despite all efforts, including drastic measures like cutting her hair, she remained above the allowed weight.

The team explored every option, even cutting off her hair, but it wasn’t enough. Vinesh’s struggle continued as she tried to lose 2 kg overnight through skipping, jogging, and even attempting to draw blood. Dehydration became a concern, and as a precaution, she received intravenous fluids after disqualification.

Throughout this process, Vinesh’s health parameters remained normal. She felt perfectly well, despite the disappointment of returning empty-handed from the Olympics.
