Vijay Sharma, coach of the National Weightlifting squad representing India at the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games, is confident of his team’s chances of winning CWG medals.
SHARMA WANTS TO PREPARE A STRONG SQUAD FOR THE NEAR FUTURE
Furthermore, he believes that the tournament will not only act as a medal-winning endeavour but a stair of success for athletes who would carry the Indian flag in the near future. Several new weightlifters are part of the Commonwealth Games squad and according to Sharma, they are extremely talented. Athletes such as Lovepreet Singh, Popy Hazarika and Achinta Sheuli have the promise to represent India in future editions of the Olympic Games.
According to the Indian coach, his job includes preparation of a strong world-class squad ready to represent the nation in future international tournaments, and the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games is just the beginning.

“A lot of new faces are there this time. You have Sanket, Jeremy, Achinta, Lovepreet, Gurdeep, Bindyarani, Popy and Purnima who are immensely talented. These are your future stars and, one day, will go on to represent the country at the Olympics. My endeavour is to prepare a strong team for the future and the Birmingham CWG is just the start. I am confident of a good showing from all of them,” Sharma mentioned to the Times of India.
THE QUALIFICATION CYCLE FOR PARIS OLYMPICS WOULD BEGIN IN DECEMBER 2022
The qualification cycle for the Paris Olympics 2024 would begin in late 2022, and to prepare for it the weightlifters must compete in at least one tournament every three months. So, Sharma wants the squad to maximize their ability and effort and prepare a strong pool of talents in the process.
“The qualification cycle for the Paris Olympics will start with the World Championships in December this year. Every three months we need to participate in a competition… sometimes it could be two. The participation in six qualifying events are compulsory in the qualification cycle. The rankings will be decided based on how a weightlifter has fared in these six qualifiers. So, the effort is to maximise our chances for Paris and prepare a strong talent pool,” he added.
