For the past two days, Deepak Chahar has been in the limelight and rightly so. The young pacer from Rajasthan took India home from an impossible situation against Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI. But he may not have been playing cricket if it was up to India’s former infamous coach, Greg Chappell, according to a shocking revelation by Venkatesh Prasad.

IND vs. SL 2021: "Don't take overseas coaches too seriously"- Venkatesh Prasad recalls how Chappell rejected Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar’s match-winning knock of 69 runs off just 82 balls took India home in a tough 276-run chase. Interestingly, when he came out to bat, the result of the game seemed inconsequential with the visitors struggling at 193/7 with more than 10 overs to go.

But he took Bhuvneshwar Kumar by his side and stitched a sensational unbeaten 84-run stand for the 8th wicket helping India not only win the game but seal the series with a match to go. With the ball too he took a couple of wickets conceding 53 runs proving his all-round capabilities.

Greg Chappell rejected Deepak due to his short height: Venkatesh Prasad

Meanwhile, former India cricketer Venkatesh Prasad has made a shocking claim. He reveals that the same Deepak Chahar was rejected by Greg Chappell for his height during his stint at the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). Prasad also reveals that Chahar was told to explore different career options as well.

“Deepak Chahar Was rejected by Greg Chappell at RCA for his height and told to look at a different occupation. And he single handedly won a match with not even his primary skills. Moral of the story- Believe in yourself and don’t take overseas coaches too seriously. There are off-course exceptions but with such wonderful talent in India, it’s time that teams and franchisees consider having Indian coaches and mentors as much as possible,” Prasad wrote in a series of tweets.

“There are off-course exceptions but with such wonderful talent in India, it’s time that teams and franchisees consider having Indian coaches and mentors as much as possible,” he further tweeted.

His intention to share the story was that the players should believe in themselves. They should not take overseas coaches too seriously. He also advises the teams and franchises to believe in Indian coaches and mentors. He believes they have better knowledge of the talent in India.

Former opener Aakash Chopra also confirms Prasad’s story.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra too had mentioned about this incident on his show Aakash Vani.

“Chahar’s story is very exciting. When he was younger, he used to practice in Rajasthan in Hanumangarh. He met Gregg Chappell – the director of the Rajasthan Cricket Academy at that time, who told him to leave cricket. Chappell told him to leave cricket not because he wouldn’t get selected into the academy but he told him that he would never become a cricketer himself,” he had said.
