The United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body for wrestling, has issued a stern warning to India regarding political interference in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) affairs. UWW President Nenad Lalovic emphasized the importance of WFI’s autonomy, stating that any political or public intrusion into its internal affairs is in violation of the UWW Constitution and the Olympic Charter.

UWW’s prolonged row with WFI

The WFI was suspended by India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports shortly after its elections in December 2023, leading to a series of legal and administrative complications. This suspension almost caused Indian wrestlers to miss out on participating in the World Championship.

Lalovic’s letter to WFI President Sanjay Singh highlighted that UWW accepts WFI as the only interlocutor for all matters concerning wrestling in India and its representation on the international level. He further stated that UWW does not accept any interference by public and political authorities in the internal affairs of its member federations, except for the control of public grants. The letter warned that suspension measures would be considered if the autonomy of the federation is not upheld fully and for the long term.

A suspension by UWW could have severe repercussions, including barring Indian wrestlers from participating in future international competitions. The national camps are already on hold due to the suspension, and if the ministry does not end the suspension, it could result in a massive loss for the sport and the country’s wrestlers.
