In a landmark move to elevate the status of football in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an ambitious plan to construct 18 football stadiums across the state. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance sports infrastructure and promote football at the grassroots level.
18 Football Stadiums in UP
The announcement was made during the historic Kolkata Derby held at Lucknow’s KD Singh Babu Stadium on September 2, 2024. The match, featuring traditional rivals Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, was a significant event for football enthusiasts in the state. Chief Minister Adityanath, addressing the crowd, emphasized the government’s commitment to developing football infrastructure and nurturing young talent.
Infrastructure Development
The plan involves building 18 football stadiums, one in each of the state’s 18 commissariats. This strategic distribution ensures that every region in Uttar Pradesh will have access to quality football facilities. In addition to the stadiums, the government has also announced the development of 827 football grounds across various blocks in the state. These grounds will serve as training and practice venues, providing aspiring footballers with the necessary infrastructure to hone their skills.
Boosting Local Talent
One of the primary objectives of this initiative is to identify and nurture local talent. By providing state-of-the-art facilities, the government aims to create an environment where young athletes can train and compete at higher levels. This move is expected to significantly boost the popularity of football in Uttar Pradesh, encouraging more youngsters to take up the sport.
Economic and Social Impact
The construction of new stadiums and football grounds is also expected to have a positive economic impact. The development projects will create job opportunities in the construction, maintenance, and management of these facilities. Additionally, hosting football matches and tournaments will attract visitors, boosting local businesses and tourism.

Government’s Commitment
Chief Minister Adityanath reiterated the government’s dedication to promoting sports in the state. He highlighted the success of the Khelo India initiative, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as a key driver of sports development in India. Inspired by this vision, Uttar Pradesh has aligned itself with the mission to make sports accessible to all.
Community Engagement
The initiative is not just about building infrastructure; it also aims to engage the community. Local schools and colleges will be encouraged to use these facilities for their sports programs. Community events and tournaments will be organized to foster a culture of sportsmanship and healthy competition.
