Roger Federer survived a rare scare as Sumit Nagal, qualifying for his first Grand Slam comeptition took the third seed and tournament favorite by a surprise to clinch the first set.

The Swiss however recovered from a pretty slow start and brought his trademark game into play to clinch the match by a comfortable scoreline of 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-4.

Following the victory over Nagal, Federer will now face Damir Dzumhur in the second round. The 20 time Grand Slam champion will be eager to set hands on his first US Open title since 2008.

Despite losing to Federer in the very first round, Sumit Nagal drew praise from various people for putting up a commendable performance. The 22-year-old looked comfortable playing under an almost full Arthur Ashe arena while also enforcing a number of errors from the Swiss early on in the game.

Nagal, who happens to be the world number 190 looked aggressive right from the word go. His game play initially looked to get the better of Federer, which forced the Swiss to commit a number of enforced errors.

Nagal surprised a number of people after winning the first set. But Federer got back to fine form and decimated his opponent in the next two sets to bring the game back into his control.

The fourth set saw Nagal put up a spirited show yet again, but he was no match for the Swiss, who survived 3 break points to clinch the 4th set 6-4 and close the match.

Following the match, Federer appreciated the efforts displayed by Nagal and said that he would have a very solid career in the future.

“I think he knows what he can bring. That’s why I think he’s going to have a very solid career. But, of course it’s not the game that comes out with the biggest surprises. It’s really consistent. I think he did it very well tonight,” Federer said after the match.
