United commence Saul pursuit, City look elsewhere for alternative

Manchester United have joined the race to land Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez come summer. Rivals Manchester City had been on the trail of the midfielder with pretty strong links for the deal, but are said to have found an alternative already, since their neighbours also decided to join the midfielder’s pursuit.

Manchester City had been on the lookout for a long time replacement for Fernandinho and had identified Atleti’s Saul as the one for the job. United’s newly appointed full-time manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been aiming to land another addition to his midfield, alongside the likes of Matic and Pogba.

However, since Solskjaer also seems to have his eyes set on Los Colchoneros‘ 24-year old midfield sensation, the Red Devils have joined the race for his signature. City in turn decided to turn away from the Spain international, and instead will be hoping to lure in his fellow teammate Rodri Hernandez as the perfect alternative.

One would think, with City out of the way, Solskjaer’s path to sign Saul this summer would’ve become just half of what it was, but that will not be the case, especially since a whopping £130m release clause hangs over him after he signed a mammoth 9-year deal with the Europa League winners.

City on the other hand find Rodri’s £70m fee affordable and there is nothing that will stop the Premier League champions from triggering that clause.
