“It Was Unexpected For Us” – Sourav Ganguly Opens Up On Virat Kohli Quitting Test Captaincy

Former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly recently stated that the board was not ready for India’s former Test Captain Virat Kohli to step down from his role citing his personal decision. Ganguly recently shared his thoughts on Kohli amid the fans calling for the reinstatement of Kohli as India’s Test captain. It comes after the Rohit Sharma-led side suffered a 209-run defeat to Australia in the World Test Championship final.

Earlier in 2021, the BCCI’s decision to replace Virat Kohli as India’s ODI captain despite the latter stating his intention to continue in the role while resigning from the T20I captaincy, sparked speculation about his relationship with the board and Ganguly.

Kohli resigned as T20I captain ahead of the T20 World Cup in October and was then removed as ODI captain ahead of the South Africa tour in December. These events prompted a direct confrontation between Kohli and BCCI chairman Sourav Ganguly, as opposing narratives emerged regarding the T20 decision and the manner in which Kohli was informed of his dismissal as ODI captain during a routine call with the selectors.

Kohli’s captaincy saga saw a twist on January 16, 2022, when he resigned as Test captain less than 24 hours after India lost the series in South Africa. Kohli’s decision to step down as Test captain marked the end of a months-long battle between Kohli and the Indian cricket board.

Sourav Ganguly opens up on Virat Kohli

Sourav Ganguly recently spoke with Aaj Tak and shared his thoughts on Kohli stepping down as Test captain. He said:

“BCCI were not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an India captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time”

Fans on social media have been sharing details about Kohli’s record as captain and they have attempted to justify the reason he should be reinstated as the team’s captain. Notably, Kohli finished his tenure as the fourth-most successful captain in Test history, with 40 victories and 11 draws in 68 matches as the Indian captain. And ranks third among all 28 Test captains who have led a team in 40 or more matches in terms of win percentage (50%).
