Umran Malik has taken the IPL by storm, both literally and figuratively. According to many, SRH have unearthed a new pace sensation of India. Malik was initially a net bowler for SRH. But he was roped in as a Covid replacement for T Natarajan.
Umran Malik hails from Jammu and Kashmir. There haven’t been many cricketers from J&K who have made it big in the international stage for India. But Malik looks to have all the tools to make it to the top stage.
Umran Malik comes from a very humble background. His father, Abdul Malik is a vegetable seller by profession and recently opened up on the hardships that the family encountered in order to fulfill Umran’s dream. Abdul was proud to see his son making debut for SRH against KKR and he hopes that one day he will play for India.
“My son got inclined to cricket when he was just 3 years old. He always dreamt of becoming a professional cricketer. We were so happy when he was picked up in the playing XI by Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. We were glued to the TV and there were tears of joy in my and my wife’s eyes. My son has worked very hard. We always supported him. We hope that one day he plays for Team India,” said Abdul.
Abdul further revealed that he was congratulated by the Lt. Governor after Umran went on to make his IPL debut for Hyderabad.
“It is not an ordinary achievement for us. We are from a poor family. I sell vegetables and fruits to make a living. My son has made me proud. Our joy knows no bounds. Even Lt Governor Sahib has congratulated us. I pray to Almighty that my son continues to excel in his career,” he added.
Umran Malik bowls the fastest ball of IPL 2021
In his debut game, Umran clocked a speed of 150+ kmph in only his third delivery. Hence, he bowled the fastest ball by an Indian in this year’s IPL. But against RCB he bettered his record.
During his spell against RCB, Umran bowled three deliveries in excess of 150 in just one over. In the same over, he bowled the fastest ball of this edition’s IPL at 153 kmph. He is ahead of Lockie Ferguson and Anrich Nortje who are currently world’s fastest bowlers.
Malik even took his maiden IPL wicket after dismissing KS Bharat on a sharp bouncer. His spell was crucial as he didn’t let batsmen score runs and take the game away from SRH. After the match, he was praised by RCB and Indian skipper Virat Kohli who called him a promising prospect for India.
