Indian international umpire Anil Chaudhary recently shared his experiences of officiating matches involving India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma. Known for his aggressive batting style and sharp cricketing mind, Rohit Sharma has made a significant impact on the game, and according to Chaudhary, umpiring for him is a straightforward task.

Rohit Sharma’s Aggressive Batting Style

Rohit Sharma, often referred to as the ‘Hitman’ of Indian cricket, is renowned for his powerful stroke play and ability to dominate bowlers. His aggressive approach, especially in limited-overs cricket, has made him one of the most feared batsmen in the world.

Chaudhary highlighted that this aggressive style makes umpiring for Rohit relatively easy. “Umpiring for a player like Rohit is very easy; he’s either out or not out, it’s straightforward with him. He doesn’t play confusingly,” Chaudhary mentioned.

Rohit’s ability to either hit the ball cleanly or miss it entirely simplifies the decision-making process for umpires. There are rarely any ambiguous situations when Rohit is at the crease, which reduces the chances of controversial decisions.

Beyond his hard-hitting abilities, Rohit Sharma is also praised for his exceptional cricketing intelligence. Despite his casual demeanour, Rohit possesses a sharp understanding of the game, which often goes unnoticed. Chaudhary emphasized this aspect, stating, “Rohit may seem casual, but he’s a very smart player. His game sense is excellent, and he knows exactly when to attack and when to defend.”

One of the key elements of Rohit Sharma’s batting is his impeccable footwork and ball sense. Chaudhary noted that Rohit’s natural footwork and ability to judge the ball’s trajectory are remarkable. “His footwork is excellent. He waits for the ball and knows exactly when to move forward or stay back. His short-arm pull shot is a testament to his incredible ball sense.”

Rohit Sharma is also known for his friendly interactions with umpires on the field. He often engages in light-hearted banter, which adds a positive dynamic to the game. Chaudhary recalled an incident where Rohit humorously argued with umpire Virender Sharma during a T20I match against Afghanistan. Rohit, fearing his third consecutive duck, jokingly insisted that he had hit the ball with his bat when it was signalled as a leg bye.
