India had ended Day 1 on a high and begun the next one on a good note as well, but failed to capitalize. England ended up with a precious 99-run lead and Umesh Yadav feels that they should have done better after having England reeling at 62-5 in the first session.
The pacer had struck twice early in the day to send back nightwatchman Chris Overton and the settled Dawid Malan into the pavilion. The Indian bowlers lacked the intensity from there on and were often erratic in their line and length. The pair of Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Pope took full advantage to put together a crucial partnership that killed India’s hope of attaining a possible lead.
England’s lower order pitched in with a significant contribution with Chris Woakes leading the way. The returning all-rounder scored a fifty and steered England to 290 in their first innings.
“The way we started our bowling – we took two wickets within the first 40 minutes. After that, I thought our performance dipped as we leaked around 40 runs in seven or eight overs,” Umesh Yadav said in a virtual press conference at the end of Day 2
“As a result, the batsman also returned to the flow and found a rhythm. With the ball not seaming or spinning, the batsmen will look to assert their authority. We also made mistakes as we failed to keep things tight after those two wickets, conceding too many runs in the middle phase. Otherwise, India came back strongly by understanding how to bowl,” he added
Umesh Yadav admitted that the pitch has changed over the course of the 2 days and will keep continuing to change. He also backed the batsman to score the runs and feels India have got a slid start through KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma.
“Definitely. The first-day pitch had moisture, bounce. But as the match goes on, it all changes. I think when they batted and we bowled, the track changed. But we think the way our batsmen are playing, they will do well and make a big score on this pitch,”
India are currently 43-0 at the end of Day 2. The opening pair saw out the overs without much difficulty. The visitors currently trail by 56 runs ahead of Day 3 at The Oval.
