Treesa-Gayatri reach the second round at the Macau Open Badminton

The Indian badminton duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made a remarkable start at the Macau Open 2024, advancing to the second round of the women’s doubles event. Treesa and Gayatri, seeded third in the tournament, faced a challenging first-round match against the Japanese pair of Akari Sato and Maya Taguchi.

A Hard-Fought Victory at Macau Open

The match, held at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, was a rollercoaster of emotions for both the players and the spectators. The Indian pair lost the opening game 15-21, but they bounced back with determination to win the next two games 21-16 and 21-14.

The first game saw the Japanese duo taking an early lead, heading into the mid-game interval with an 11-3 advantage. Despite a spirited fightback, Treesa and Gayatri couldn’t close the gap and lost the first game. However, the Indian pair regrouped and came out strong in the second game, leading 11-4 at the mid-game break and eventually winning 21-16. The third game followed a similar pattern, with Treesa and Gayatri dominating from the start and sealing the match in 59 minutes.

Other Indian Performances

In addition to Treesa and Gayatri’s success, other Indian players have also made their mark at the Macau Open 2024. The women’s doubles pair of N Sikki Reddy and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde progressed to the main round from the qualifiers, defeating Hong Kong’s Cheung Yan Yu and Wing Chi Chu 21-10, 21-15 in just 29 minutes.

In the men’s singles, Alap Mishra was the only Indian player to progress past the qualifying rounds. He defeated Thailand’s Korakrit Laotrakul 22-20, 21-3 before securing a 21-10, 24-22 victory against compatriot Aryamann Tandon.
