Tokyo Olympics: Kamalpreet Kaur clinches 2nd place in qualification, earns final round berth

Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur produced a stunning display of performance on Saturday, finishing the qualifying round with a second place finish to secure herself an entry into the women’s discus throw final.

Competing in Group B of the qualifications, Kaur clocked 64m in her third and final attempt, which was one of the only two automatic qualifiers for the final round.

The 25-year-old, touted to be a future discus throw icon, opened up her performance on Saturday with marking an effort of 60.29m in her first attempt. She followed up with improving it to 63.97m in her second attempt and finally touching the qualification mark at 64m.

While Kaur was only bested by Valarie Allman from the United States who finished first in the qualifiers with a distance of 66.42m, she finished ahead of both the Rio Olympics gold-medallist Sandra Perkovic, the Croatian who made her best attempt at 63.75m, as well as and reigning world champion, Cuban thrower Yaime Perez who marked her best at 63.18m.
