Ace Indian archer Deepika Kumari clinched her second straight victory on Wednesday after a hard fought battle against Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez of the United States in her Women Individual Archery Round of 32 match.

Coming off of a superb 6-0 dominating win over Bhutan’s Bhu Karma earlier today, Deepika was up against Fernandez, the 18-year-old from America who proved to be a tough fight for the World No 1.

The match commenced with a blow to Deepika as she lost the first set after starting with a 7 and failing to recover from there and at the end going down 25-26 against Fernandez, trailing 0-2.

However, the 27-year-old from Ranchi stormed back in the second set. With two 10s in three arrows, Deepika equalled the scoreline to 2-2 after a 28-25 performance against the American teenager.

Deepika continued her performance and bagged the third set as well (27-25), but Fernandez showed brilliant performance in the fourth, taking the set 25-24 after Deepika shot a 6.

The match progressed into the fifth and decider set. While Fernandez needed a 10, she managed 9 with the set ending 26-25 for Deepika, ending the match 6-4 for the top seeded Indian archer.

Deepika will be back in action on 30th July for the Round of 16 stage. However, her opponent is yet to be determined.

The winner between Maja Jager of Denmark and Diananda Choirunisa of Indonesia will play against the winner between Aussie archer Alice Ingley and Russia’s Ksenia Perova in the Round of 32 to determine Deepika’s opponent for 30th July.
