Indian boxing sensation Lovlina Borgohain who made it to the welterweight 69 kg semifinal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, lost the fight against top seed Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey on Wednesday.
Coming from a hard fought split decision victory over Chinese Taipei pugilist Nien-Chin Chen in the quarterfinals, Lovlina assured India a medal after earning her semifinal berth but cradled hopes of a gold/silver with a cruise into the 69 kg final.
Unfortunately, the Assamese boxer was dominated by her Turkish opponent Surmeneli, who secured a 5-0 unanimous decision over Lovlina to sail into the final round on Wednesday.
The first round of the fight saw an impressive start from Lovlina but as the match progressed, Surmeneli took hold of the bout with the last thirty seconds causing Lovlina the round.
The second round also saw a good start from the Indian but the top seed gradually gained the helm as the round progressed, who pressed back hard against Lovlina in the remaining half minute to secure another round.
Lovlina couldn’t change the flow of the fight in the third and final round as well, with Surmeneli winning all three rounds with a clean 5-0 unanimous decision victory to clinch a spot in the final.
