After boxer Amit Panghal, Atanu Das became the second Indian athlete on Saturday to crash out of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics after the archer lost his Round of 16 match against Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa.

Right from the first round, Atanu was on a backfoot as Furukawa, the Rio silver medallist kicked off the match with three perfect 9s and finishing with a score of 27-25, putting the Indian on a trail with a 2-0 lead.

Atanu fired back in the subsequent rounds, making it 3-1 at the end of the second round with a 28-28 tied score, followed by a 28-27 third set to level with the Japanese 3-3. The fourth set saw another draw with the both archers at 4-4.

The neck to neck match had progressed into the fifth round but unfortunately, Atanu couldn’t hold his ground anymore as Furukawa outperformed the 29-year-old to end the match 6-4.

On Friday, Deepika Kumari lost her quarterfinal clash against An Se-Young of South Korea after getting dominated by the eventual gold medallist 6-0.
