Just five days ago, iconic Indian shuttler PV Sindhu decided to back out from the upcoming Thomas & Uber Cup next month. Now, Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, the two doubles badminton stalwarts of the country have considered to withdraw from the same tournament for now. However, the pair’s decision might change if Rankireddy tests COVID negative.
PV Sindhu’s reason to quit the Uber cup was cited as ‘personal’ by the Olympic silver medallist, but the world No.10 men’s doubles pair’s decision depends on Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who was recently found positive for COVID-19.
Thomas cup participation depends on COVID test results: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who was recommended by the sports ministry be granted the Arjuna award, had tested positive for COVID at the end of August, and missed the National Sports Awards on 29th August.
The 20 year old has his second test on Monday, and will consider the decision regarding Thomas cup on the results.
“I will take a call depending on the test results. I am doing well, no symptoms as such,” Rankireddy was quoted by Hindustan Times.
If the results are negative, both Shetty and Rankireddy will consider flying to Denmark, the former told the Olympic Channel.
“He (Rankireddy) is due to take another COVID-19 test on Monday and we will decide our future based on that,” Chirag Shetty said.
Shetty also stated that the duo will join the national camp for the Thomas and Uber cup on 15th September, if his partner tests negative.
“If the result is negative, Satwiksairaj will need a few more days before we can hit the court. We are hoping to join the camp around September 15,” the 23 year old added.
The 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup, which is the 31st edition of Thomas (male) cup and the 28th edition of Uber (female) cup, will be hosted from 3rd to 11th October in the city of Aarhus, Denmark.
