The Indian cricket team will partake in a four-day warm-up fixture against county side Leicestershire after ECB approved BCCI’s request. The Rohit Sharma-led side will play the contest from June 24 onwards.

The Men In Blue is scheduled to tour England to compete in a three-match ODI and T20 series. Apart from the limited-overs contests, the team will also play a Test match at Birmingham, which will be part of the World Test Championship last year, which was not completed due to a COVID outbreak.

India currently leads the series 2-1 after famous wins at Lord’s and the Oval. The tour of England will be Rohit Sharma’s first overseas assignment. A spokesman for the Leicestershire County said:

“We are delighted to be welcoming India to Uptonsteel County Ground to help the side prepare for their busy summer schedule in England. It’s incredibly exciting to have an international team decorated with world-class stars coming to Leicester, and lining up against the likes of Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah will prove an invaluable learning experience for our young squad,”

According to a report by Cricbuzz, head coach Rahul Dravid, along with the BCCI played a crucial role in the arrangement of the warm-up contest.

India are eyeing their first Test series win in England since 2007. The remaining Test which is slated to take place in Edgbaston, Birmingham also holds a lot of importance when it comes to the visitors’ aspirations to make it to their second consecutive WTC Final.

The selectors will name two sides for the tour with a second-string side playing a two-match T20I series against Ireland while the rest will compete in England. The tour will kickstart with the longest format on July 1. The remaining fixtures are as follows:

  • IND vs ENG 1st T20: July 7 – Southampton
  • IND vs ENG 2nd T20: July 9 – Birmingham
  • IND vs ENG 3rd T20: July 10 – Nottingham
  • IND vs ENG 1st ODI: July 12 – Kennington Oval
  • IND vs ENG 2nd ODI: July 14 – Lord’s
  • IND vs ENG 3rd ODI: July 17 – Manchester
