Defending champion Magnus Carlsen was held to a 67-move draw by Indian chess grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa in the 12th and penultimate round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2023 in Wijk aan Zee, near Amsterdam on Saturday.

Carlsen’s chances of retaining the title were effectively ended by the draw with the prodigious Indian youngster. Prior to the final round, Carlsen (7) shared third place, behind the leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov (8), followed by Anish Giri (7.5) in second place.

Arjun Erigaisi, meanwhile, went down against Parham Maghsoodloo. D Gukesh, however,  marked another draw with Levon Aronian.

The challengers’ section saw B Adhiban maintain his joint-fourth position with his third win in the five rounds. The loss, however, was suffered by R Vaishali who was defeated by Max Warmerdam. A one-point lead over Turkey’s Mustafa Yilmaz helped Germany’s Donchenko (9) close in on the title.
