In a disappointing turn of events, the Indian women’s doubles badminton pair Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto faced their second consecutive defeat in the group stage at the Paris Olympics 2024. They went down in straight games to the formidable Japanese duo of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida.

Ashwini and Tanisha’s straight-set defeat

Ponnappa and Crasto lost 11-21, 12-21 in a 48-minute Group C match against the world number four Japanese pair. With two defeats in a row, the Indian duo now stares at an early exit from the women’s doubles badminton competition. They had previously lost their opener against South Korea’s Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong.

The Japanese duo’s quick court coverage, coordination, and effective combination of power and placement proved too much for the Indian pair. Despite their efforts, Ponnappa and Crasto couldn’t apply enough pressure on their opponents.

Ponnappa expressed disappointment but remained hopeful. She stated, “We have one more match, and I hope we can win that.” Their final group game will be against Australia’s Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu.

As the Paris Olympics continue, the Indian contingent faces both triumphs and setbacks. While Ponnappa and Crasto’s journey may be cut short, their determination and spirit remain commendable.
