The Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar is seemingly not a fan of Team India’s decision to have an optional training session. The session took place a couple of days ahead of their blockbuster clash in T20 World Cup 2022 opener against Pakistan in Melbourne. Gavaskar questioned why India opted for an optional training session on Friday, knowing the forecast for rain on Saturday and Sunday in Melbourne.
Sunil Gavaskar raises question on the training session
Speaking to India Today, Sunil Gavaskar stated that India should make a statement at the start of the World Cup by getting into a rhythm in their training sessions and practising with a sense of purpose instead of opting for optional practice.
India captain Rohit Sharma led the optional training session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. While Rohit batted in the nets, taking throwdowns that simulated left-arm pacer. Rohit was joined by the likes of Dinesh Karthik, Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami at the net session in Melbourne.
On the other hand, Pakistan players turned out in full force for their training session on Friday with the Pakistan Cricket Board sharing clips of their intense practice session.
“I don’t know what it tells you but it’s something that I don’t agree with. I don’t agree with it for the simple reason that, at the start of the tournament, when you had your match (warm-up match) washed out, when you have come to Melbourne and had a day off, and then the next day, you opt not to practice?” Gavaskar said.
“At the end of the day, those who didn’t come out for practice can turn out to be match-winners. But you want a rhythm going as a team. You want to see a sense of purpose.”
Team India left for Australia in the early morning hours of October 6 and played two practice games against Western Australia in the build-up for the tournament. India’s second warm-up tie vs New Zealand was washed out on Wednesday (October 19) before the marquee clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23.
