T20 WC: Paras Mhambrey backs Rohit and Virat’s batting intent ahead of a huge clash against Australia

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

India’s bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, has lauded the star Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, for their aggressive intent during the Super 8 fixture against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024.

The duo got India off to a brisk start, adding 39 runs for the first wicket off 22 balls. Rohit Sharma scored 23 (11) with three fours and a six, while Virat Kohli registered his highest score of the tournament so far, scoring 37 (28) with one four and three sixes.

Kohli wasted no time, collecting back-to-back boundaries after facing just three balls. His aggressive approach showcased his intent and determination.

Paras Mhambrey’s views on India’s intent-driven approach

Paras Mhambrey emphasized that Rohit Sharma is playing his natural game, which he continued from the ODI World Cup 2023. This consistency reflects Rohit’s form and adaptability.

“I think Virat has been – in the past, we’ve seen from the IPL itself and Rohit from the World Cup. I think both of them are in great form. I think every game there is a certain plan that you go in with. Sometimes some individual has to take a chance, the other has to play a defending role. So, I think that’s going to happen out here, that’s what is happening. Rohit is playing his natural game,” said Paras Mhambrey in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Australia game.

Mhambrey also praised Kohli’s intent, highlighting that it aligns with the team management’s template. The aggressive mindset is crucial for success in T20 cricket.

“But it’s good to see that in this game especially, the intent that Virat has shown, I think that’s good to see that, good to see that intent. And I think performance – you’ll have games like this, you’ll get a 40-odd, 50-odd run, but I think the way he went about with the intent, that was good to see. That was good-hearted. And I think that’s the intent that we want as a batting unit as well. Something that we’ve been emphasizing throughout the previous World Cup, this World Cup as well,” he added.

As India faces Australia in a must-win match, the aggressive intent displayed by Rohit and Kohli bodes well for the team’s chances. Their contributions are vital as India aims to secure a spot in the T20 World Cup semi-finals.
