Middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav will reportedly be added to the Test side that will face New Zealand in a two-match series as part of the World Test Championship. The player was included in the side during the tour of England but did not avail a chance to make his debut.
The team will be led by Ajinkya Rahane for the first Test before Virat Kohli joins the setup for the final Test in Mumbai. The team includes the usual middle-order mainstays in the form of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, but Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari are notable omissions.
Yadav was heavily touted to play in the away series against England, especially given Pujara and Rahane’s poor form, but the management opted to trust and stick with the duo across the four Tests.
“Suryakumar will be making a comeback to the Test team. He will join India’s Test team in Kanpur from Kolkata,” a source told mid-day.com on Monday.
Suryakumar Yadav could potentially be an all-format player
The batsman broke into the team following a string of successful IPL seasons with the Mumbai Indians. He has been impressive in white-ball cricket, playing a major part in the home series against England, the away tour of Sri Lanka, and even the T20 World Cup.
Apart from him, Shreyas Iyer also could be a potential candidate for making his debut in the longest format of the game for India. Yadav had two poor outings after his match-winning knock in the first T20I against New Zealand in Jaipur. It is also to be noted that Yadav has not played a first-class game in over 20 months.
Team India squad for New Zealand Tests:
Ajinkya Rahane (Captain), KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper), KS Bharat (wicket-keeper), Ravindra Jadeja, R. Ashwin, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Md. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
