India failed to reach the 2019 Cricket World Cup final as they lost to New Zealand in the semi-final. And the reason was somewhere the conundrum of the no.4 spot. India had tried a lot of players in the place and including Ambati Rayudu. He did quite well and it looked like Rayudu has sealed the place in the squad as well.
But the MSK Prasad-led selection committee didn’t select him and named Vijay Shankar in that place and that raised many questions as well. After that, Rayudu tweeted a sarcasm ‘3D’ tweet which led to a controversy on social media. And the most-debatable no.4 slot is yet to be filled with a permanent solution.
Suresh Raina, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, also said that Rayudu was perfect for the number four spot and even he also believed the Team India would have won the World Cup if he was there in the squad.
“I wanted Rayudu to be India’s number four because he was working very hard, playing [for] almost one and a half years. He performed really well and he wasn’t there. I didn’t enjoy the tour in 2018 because of the circumstances where Rayudu failed his fitness test. It didn’t feel good that I was picked as he failed,” Raina was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“He was good at number four. If he was part of the squad for the World Cup, we would have won the tournament. Rayudu was the best choice and as it’s the way he plays the game in the CSK. And he was batting really well in the camp in Chennai,” he further added.
Meanwhile, Vijay Shankar and Rishabh Pant have been selected to play in the middle-order during the campaign. However, they failed to do much in the tournament and the team eventually failed to win the title as well despite having a strong pool of players.
Currently, both Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu have been preparing to play for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming 13th edition of Indian Premier League in the UAE.
