While Team India have been playing the much-awaited four-match Test series against Australia, their key openers – Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal failed miserably in front of the fiery pace attack of Aussies. Howveer, former Indian player, Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out on the openers as they both got dismissed in quick successions and failed to provide with a good start to the team in Adelaide.
There were a lot of debate over Prithvi Shaw’s inclusion in the playing eleven and he failed to justify his place too. He was dismissed for a duck by the left-arm speedster Mitchell Starc on the second delivery of the match. The ball came inside after getting an edge of the bat after pitching outside the off-stump and hit the stumps.
On the other hand, Agarwal too got out in a similar way for mere 17 off another pacer Pat Cummins in the nineteenth over where the ball hit the top of the middle and off stump after pitching.
However, while speaking on 7 Cricket, Gavaskar stated that both of them did the same mistake of leaving too much space between the bat and the pad, which can give a lot of problems while facing a delivery that moves inwards.
While talking about Shaw’s dismissal, Gavaskar said, “Look at where his bat ends, there is such a big gap between bat and pad.” He further added that since it was the second delivery of the game only, Shaw should have played with soft hands. He explained that “the trick is to try and play as close to the pads as possible” and that the bat speed should have been less at the start of the innings.
“You (Shaw) are not even off the mark, you want to try and reduce your bat speed. Don’t leave any gap between bat and pad,” he again shared. Meanwhile, for Agarwal, Sunil Gavaskar said that his bat was far away from his pads. “There was such a big gap, a truck could have gone between that bat and pad.”
