India’s top singles tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has withdrawn from the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Sweden due to a back injury. This development comes as a significant blow to the Indian team, which was counting on Nagal’s experience and skill to lead them in the crucial tie scheduled for September 14-15 in Stockholm.
Sumit Nagal’s Injury and Its Impact
Nagal, who recently reached a career-high ranking of 68 in July, has been struggling with a persistent back issue. This injury also forced him to withdraw from the US Open doubles event, highlighting the severity of his condition. Despite his efforts to manage the injury, doctors have advised him to rest for the next two weeks, leaving him insufficient time to prepare for the Davis Cup tie.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Nagal expressed his disappointment at having to pull out of the Davis Cup tie. “I was really looking forward to representing India in the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Sweden. However, due to a back issue that’s been bothering me for the past few weeks, doctors have advised me to rest. This same issue also led to my withdrawal from the US Open doubles. I’m deeply disappointed to be missing this tie, but I have to listen to my body to prevent my back from worsening so that I can finish the season strong and healthy. Good luck to the Indian team – I’ll be cheering for you all from home!”
With Nagal’s withdrawal, reserve player Aryan Shah has been drafted into the main team, while Manas Dhamne has been put on standby. The Indian team, now led by Ramkumar Ramanathan, will face a tough challenge against Sweden on the indoor hard courts of Stockholm. The absence of Nagal, India’s highest-ranked singles player, is undoubtedly a setback, but the team remains optimistic about their chances.
UPDATE – Manas Dhamne will go as a reserve. Thus, Aryan Shah has been drafted into the Playing 5 in place of Sumit Nagal
However, the captain always does have the choice of replacing someone in the team by him if he feels that it’s going to benefit the team

Looking Ahead
The Indian Davis Cup team will need to regroup and strategize in Nagal’s absence. The tie against Sweden is critical, and the team will rely on the experience of players like Ramkumar Ramanathan and the youthful energy of Aryan Shah. Former national champion Ashutosh Singh, who has been named the new coach of the national team, will play a pivotal role in guiding the players through this challenging period.
