Sumit Nagal’s terrific run at the highest level continued as the top-ranked Indian singles player did not go down without a fight against World No. 7 Holger Rune in the men’s singles second-round match at the Monte Carlo Masters. It was a sensational effort from Sumit Nagal to take a set from Rune, a two-time French Open quarter-finalist.

Nagal, who is currently ranked 93 in the ATP rankings, made history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the main draw at the Monte Carlo Masters after 49 years. His journey in the tournament was nothing short of a fairy-tale run.
The second-round match against Rune was a rain-affected encounter that spanned over two days. Despite the challenging conditions, Nagal showcased his determination and fighting spirit. He gave Rune a stiff test, pushing the match into a deciding third set.
The match started with Rune winning the first set 6-3. However, Nagal bounced back in the second set, securing a double break against Rune. Displaying an impressive blend of determination and tenacity, Nagal clinched the second set with a scoreline of 6-3, pushing the game into a thrilling third set.
Despite a promising start in the third set, Nagal couldn’t maintain the momentum. Rune, showcasing his exceptional touch, broke Nagal’s serve in the deciding set and eventually won the match 2-1. The final scoreline read 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in favor of Rune.

Earlier in the tournament, Nagal had stunned Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the first round with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory. This victory made him the first Indian to win a main draw match at the Monte Carlo Masters.
Although Nagal had to bow out of the tournament, his performance was highly commendable. Taking a set off a player of Rune’s calibre is no small feat. Nagal’s performance made heads turn and signalled his readiness for the big fight at the biggest of stages.
