Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal has advanced to the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open, also known as the Indian Wells Masters, as a ‘lucky loser’ after Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal withdrew from the event.
Sumit Nagal would enter the main draw despite losing the final qualifying round against South Korea’s Seong-Chan Hong. Nagal lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7) against Hong despite being one set up early in the match.
Earlier, Nagal brushed past the challenge of American wildcard Stefan Dostanic in straight sets in his first outing at the Indian Wells Masters on Monday.
Sumit Nagal advances to the main draw, thanks to Rafael Nadal
It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament at Indian Wells.
Everyone knows how much I love this place and how much I love to play here. That’s also one of the reasons why I came very early to the desert to practice and try to get ready. pic.twitter.com/gmvs5kfGO2— Rafa Nadal (@RafaelNadal) March 7, 2024
Nadal, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, was slated to make a much-anticipated return to the court. He was scheduled to face former World No. 3 Milos Raonic, citing his lack of readiness to compete at the highest level as the reason for his withdrawal.
The 37-year-old Spaniard has been dealing with injury issues and had to miss most of the 2023 season due to a hip flexor injury. Despite his dedicated efforts in practice, Nadal acknowledged that he did not feel fully prepared to compete at the demanding level expected at such a significant tournament.
However, Nadal, withdrawal paved the way for Nagal to step into the main draw. Nadal’s withdrawal is indeed a disappointment for his fans worldwide, but it also opens up new opportunities for players like Nagal.
Sumit Nagal, a promising talent in the world of tennis, has been making waves with his impressive performances on the court. As a result of Nadal’s withdrawal, Nagal, who is currently ranked 101 in the ATP men’s world tour, will now face off against Canada’s Milos Raonic.
This advancement marks a significant moment for Indian tennis enthusiasts as they get to witness Sumit Nagal in action at the second-largest tennis tournament in the United States.
