Stoop to conquer: Marcelo takes a knee after scoring for Real Madrid

In their first La Liga game since the league was suspended due to the still ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Real Madrid defeated SD Eibar 3-1. Marcelo scored a terrific goal, the third for Madrid at the 37th minute of the game, and celebrated by taking a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Although Real Madrid won in a comfortable margin, both Eden Hazard and Sergio Ramos had to be substituted early in the second half, and both were seen applying ice packs while sitting in the stands. Especially concerning is the case of Hazard, who was seen applying the ice pack around the same right ankle that has caused him multiple injuries during his career. He most recently injured the ankle in November and February, and had to undergo surgery in March.

“We knew Eden would lack a bit of rhythm playing the whole game. He played well for an hour, he took a knock which was a scare but at half-time he said he was fine. He is happy with what he has done and we are happy with him,” Real coach Zinedine Zidane commented.

While Hazard seemed to regain form after a mediocre season, it was Marcelo’s goal and celebration that attracted attention. Marcelo has been one of the most consistent players in Real Madrid since joining the club in 2007. He has played 355 matches for Los Blancos. Known for his swift offensive abilities for both the national team and club, Marcelo has scored 26 times for Madrid.

Being a Brazilian and Real Madrid right back known for dual mastery in offence and defence, Marcelo has been frequently compared with Brazil and Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos. Carlos himself considers Marcelo his heir, the best left back in the world and believes that “Marcelo possesses a better technical ability than me.”
