Even though they were not the favourites in the match against Chennai Super Kings yesterday, the Rajasthan Royals proved themselves on the UAE pitch with an astounding total of 216, to which Jofra Archer gave the finishing touches with some quick hits in the final over, along with economic bowling. Opening up the 2020 IPL campaign with a superb victory, the captain Steve Smith sheds all praise over the English pacer for his stunning all-rounder performance last night at Sharjah.

Rajasthan Royals’ mammoth of a score begun with a 32-ball-74 from Sanju Samson, with Smith himself joining in with 69 runs off 47 balls, which propelled the score towards the double century mark.

However, it was Archer’s bazookas against CSK’s Lungi Ngidi in the last over that helped them reach a score of 216. The South African’s back-to-back no balls became too costly for the three-time champions, as Archer smashed four sixes, and finished off the first innings with an unbelievable 8-ball-27.

In addition to producing fireworks with the bat, Archer was equally marvellous in defending that mammoth of a scoreline against the CSK batting lineup. The 25-year-old was very economical with the ball, giving away only 26 runs in four overs, with also picking the wicket of the deadly Faf du Plessis (72-off-37), who was propelling CSK to the target score with massive hits as well.

Steve Smith praises Jofra Archer for his ‘terrific’ all-rounder performance

Having registered a stunning 16 run victory in the first match of their IPL 2020 campaign, the Rajasthan Royals skipper lauded Jofra Archer after the game, along with the team’s impressive defending against CSK’s chase.

“Jofra at the end was magnificent, getting us up to that total and then the boys did a good job with the ball… He came in and played an incredible inning tonight. He is a terrific player for us and did well with the ball as well,” Steve Smith said in the post-match interview.

Now on top of the table thanks to a superb NRR of +0.800, Rajasthan Royals will next take on Kings XI Punjab on 27th September at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
