Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a last-ball defeat against Mumbai Indians which ended their five-match winning streak. With two required off the final delivery in the high-scoring thriller, Pollard nudged the final ball towards deep midwicket to run a double and complete the historic chase. Following the match, CSK coach Stephen Fleming revealed why the field was spread out for the final ball.
While many were taken aback by the field setting employed by MS Dhoni for the last ball, Fleming claimed that he was not surprised with the skipper’s approach. The former Kiwi explained that since Pollard is an excellent timer of the ball, a fielder in the deep was necessary.
“Not really (if he was surprised to see the field). Pollard is such a good timer of the ball that you never know what he’s going to do. Got so much to win, to be honest, we were looking for something like the stumps being hit or like the result, we had when we got beaten in the (2019) final,” Fleming said
The coach added that there were a lot of instances in the match that needs to be assessed apart from the last ball.
“So, we’ll go have a look over that. I think there are a lot of other instances that we’ll have a look at rather than just the last ball,” Fleming concluded
With 16 runs required off the final over, Pollard took MI home with a couple of sixes and a boundary off Lungi Ngidi.
The MI fraternity, which has come alive with the change in venue, was all praise for Pollard who remained unbeaten on 87 off 34 deliveries.
CSK had their moments to win the game, the biggest one of which came in the closing stages of the game where Faf du Plessis spilled an easy chance at long-on to give Pollard a lifeline.
The league leaders will now face Rajasthan Royals at the same venue on Wednesday to begin their second half of the campaign.
