SSP Chawrasia, a prominent figure in Indian golf, has made headlines with his performance at the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in Korea. Despite being winless on the Asian Tour since 2017, Chawrasia shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 to rise to tied 13th at the halfway stage of the tournament.

Chawrasia leaps to an impressive 13th position

Chawrasia’s performance in the first round was a 1-over 72, which placed him in the overnight tied 52nd position. However, his exceptional performance in the second round brought him up to the 13th position. This significant jump in the leaderboard signifies Chawrasia’s resilience and skill.

Chawrasia was among only two Indians to make the cut this week in Korea. The other Indian golfer who made the cut was Ajeetesh Sandhu, who was tied in the 42nd position. Among the remaining three Indian golfers, Shiv Kapur missed the cut by one shot, while S Chikkarangapa and Karandeep Kochhar were further behind in tied 104th and tied 129th positions respectively.

Chawrasia’s round started from the 10th hole, and he birdied the 11th and the 18th holes. He then added two more birdies on the second and ninth holes. His performance was marked by precision and control, which are key attributes in the game of golf.

The GS Caltex Maekyung Open saw some brilliant performances from other golfers as well. Thailand’s Chonlatit Chuenboonngam upstaged the favoured home stars from Korea to take the halfway lead after shooting the lowest round of the week so far. His brilliant bogey-free nine-under-par 62 featured eagles on two of the par fours and was one short of the 23-year-old course record.
