The T20 World Cup 2024 has been a topic of controversy for the Sri Lankan cricket team. Following their loss to South Africa, Sri Lankan stars, including captain Wanindu Hasaranga and spinner Maheesh Theekshana, expressed their dissatisfaction with the tournament’s scheduling.
So unfair for Sri Lankan Cricket: Maheesh Theekshana
Sri Lanka faced a crushing defeat against South Africa, scoring their lowest total ever of 77. This match was held in New York, and the team had to immediately prepare for their next game against Bangladesh in Dallas. The tight schedule and extensive travel have been a significant concern for the team.
Theekshana voiced his frustration, stating, “So unfair for us, we have to leave every day [after the match] because we are playing [at] four different venues. It’s really unfair for us, but it doesn’t matter when you play [on the field].”. The team had to endure an eight-hour delay at the Miami airport before their flight to New York. On the match day against South Africa, they had to wake up around 5 am to reach the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.
Sri Lanka is one of the two teams in the tournament, the other being the Netherlands, that are playing their first-round matches at four different venues. This has resulted in a hectic schedule, with the team having to travel immediately after each game. Theekshana pointed out that some teams have the advantage of playing all their matches at the same venue, which allows them to familiarize themselves with the conditions.
Hasaranga also shared his thoughts on the matter, acknowledging the tough few days the team had due to their travel schedule. The team’s management is reportedly trying to address the issue.
Sri Lankan cricket team captain Wanindu Hasaranga and spin bowler Mahesh Thekshana have raised their voices on the difficulties faced by the team and described the World Cup schedule as unfair.
