Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga has called it a day from cricket after an illustrious career. He came into prominence with his unique slingy side-arm action and evolved to be one of the best T20 bowlers in history. His most notable accolades include the multiple hattricks, T20 World Cup triumph and the IPL titles with Mumbai Indians.

The 38-year-old carved a legacy for himself with his ability to bowl toe-crushing yorkers as well as slower yorkers which often used to deceive the batsmen.

“Hanging up my T20 shoes and retiring from all forms of cricket! Thankful to all those who supported me in my journey, and looking forward to sharing my experience with young cricketers in the years to come,” Malinga tweeted.

“I want to give 100 per cent rest to my T20 bowling shoes. While my shoes will rest, my love for the game will never ask for rest,” he added

He scalped 546 wickets across all the formats at a national level. He hung up his boots from the longest format of the game in 2011 itself and had last played a T20 for Sri Lanka against West Indies in 2020. The pacer primarily focused on franchise cricket in the latter stage of his career.

He had already announced his retirement from franchise cricket after being released by Mumbai Indians. Sri Lanka did not include him in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“I want to thank each and everyone who supported me throughout my T20 journey. I want to thank the Sri Lankan cricket board and team members. And Mumbai Indians cricket team, especially the team owners and officials,” he concluded

The veteran is one of the most decorated bowlers in IPL history with wickets and accolades both equally playing a role. He will be leaning towards a coaching role in the future with his days as a player coming to an end. He served as a bowling mentor for Mumbai Indians in the 2018 edition.
