Sreeja Akula Shines at WTT Lagos: Maiden WTT Contender Final and Doubles Triumph

India’s table tennis sensation, Sreeja Akula, made waves at the WTT Contender Lagos 2024 event in Nigeria. Sreeja, a member of the Paris Olympics squad, displayed incredible resilience.

In a thrilling semifinal match, she saved three match points against compatriot Sutirtha Mukherjee, securing a 3-2 victory (11-8, 13-15, 11-9, 9-11, 12-10). This win propelled her to her maiden singles final at this level. She will face China’s Ding Yijie in the summit clash.

Sreeja also teamed up with Archana Kamath in the women’s doubles. Their seamless coordination led to a convincing 3-0 victory (11-7, 11-5, 12-10) over Asian Games bronze medalists Ayhika Mukherjee and Sutirtha. The all-Indian duo of Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade will challenge them for the title.

By advancing to the WTT Contender final in the singles category, Sreeja etched her name in history as the first Indian to achieve this feat. Her remarkable journey continues, and fans eagerly await her performance in the final.

In the final, they will face another Indian pair, Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade, ensuring an all-Indian showdown on Sunday. Diya and Yashaswini advanced to the final after a closely contested four-game win over the young Chinese duo of Ding Yijie and Sun Sinan.

Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles, Manav Thakkar and Manush Utpal Shah also secured their spot in the final with a comfortable straight-game victory (11-4, 11-9, 11-5) against the Chinese pair of Ning Xiankun and Kang Youde. They are set to face the Nigerian pairing of Azeez Solanke and Olajide Omotayo in the final on Sunday.
