Sprinter Dhanalakshmi Sekar and triple jumper Aishwarya Babu who were set to fly to Birmingham for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, have been removed from the Indian athletics contingent after both of them failed dope tests.
Just a week before the Commonwealth Games kick off on next Thursday 28th July, Dhanalakshmi and Aishwarya have been cut from the 36-member Indian athletics team and have been slapped with provisional suspensions.
Dhanalakshmi, who hails from Tamil Nadu and shot to fame after defeating sprinting icons Dutee Chand and Hima Das at the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers last year, underwent a dope test conducted abroad by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) of the World Athletics and her sample returned positive for a banned steroid.
“Dhanalakshmi tested positive in a dope test conducted by AIU. She will not go for Birmingham CWG,” sources told PTI.
Last week, Dhanalakshmi clinched 200m gold at the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Meet on June 26, as well as set a new personal best time of 22.89 seconds. She was to be a part of the 100m and the 4x100m relay team, alongside Dutee, Hima and Srabani Nanda.
Aishwarya, who is the reigning triple jump national record holder with a 14.14m jump at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai last month, failed the dope test conducted by NADA during the Championships.
