The newly appointed Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, held a crucial meeting with the President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), PT Usha, on June 13, 2024. This meeting marked Mandaviya’s first official interaction with the IOA since taking charge of the sports ministry.

Mansukh Mandaviya extends support for Paris Olympics

Mandaviya, who replaced Anurag Thakur as the Sports Minister, took charge on June 9, 2024, following the swearing-in of the new NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting was also attended by the new Minister of State for Sports, Raksha Khadse, Sports Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi, and Sports Authority of India’s Director General Sandip Pradhan.

The primary agenda of the meeting was to review India’s preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. Mandaviya was briefed about the country’s readiness for the Paris Games. “I today visited the IOA officials for the first time and they briefed me about India’s preparation for the Paris Olympics. The government is committed to extending all possible support,” Mandaviya said in a brief address to the media.

PT Usha, the legendary athlete and now the IOA President, expressed her satisfaction with the meeting. She stated, “The Sports Minister today visited IOA along with the Minister of State for Sports and I am so happy that they wanted to know about IOA and about Paris preparations.”

Usha further added, “We have done everything good this time and I have briefed him. We will be in contact every week and I hope that this is good for our Olympic athletes.” She also expressed hope that India’s contingent for the Paris Olympics would exceed 100 athletes, similar to the Tokyo Games.

The Paris Olympics 2024, scheduled to commence on July 26 and conclude on August 11, is a much-anticipated event. With the new Sports Minister taking proactive steps to understand and enhance India’s preparations, the country’s athletes can look forward to strong support and resources as they gear up to represent India on the global stage.
