2019 is almost over and its time to take a look back at the major occurrence that has happened in the world of sports in the last 12 months. As the year ends, we are proud to announce that Sports India Show is conducting its first Sports India Show Year End Awards 2019! We are focusing on Football, Cricket, Kabbadi and Athletics, and there are different categories under the four main sports.
The 2019 Ballon d’Or saw FC Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi winning the award for a record sixth time. 2019 Women’s world cup winner and United States captain Megan Rapinoe became the best female footballer. Matthijs de Ligt of Juventus was chosen as the best young talent.
Alisson, the Brazilian who won the Copa America trophy and lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy with Liverpool, won the best goalkeeper award. Cristiano Ronaldo was named the Italian league’s player of the year. Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri overtook Messi to become the second highest international goalscorer.
The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup trophy was lifted by the joint host England. Rohit Sharma scored the most runs and Mitchell Starc secured the most number of wickets, and Kane Williamson became the player of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians were the champions of the 2019 Indian Premier League. Andre Russell won the best player award, while David Warner and Imran Tahir were the highest run scorer and highest wicket taker, respectively.
Team India skipper Virat Kohli is ranked 1st in both the ICC Top 10 Test and ODI batsmen lists. Jasprit Bumrah leads the ODI bowlers list, and Pat Cummins is on top of the Test bowlers list.
In the 2019 Pro Kabbadi League, Bengal Warriors won their first title, defeating Dabang Delhi in the final. Bengaluru Bulls star Pawan Kumar Sehrawat became the best raider with 346 points. Fazel Atrachali of U Mumba topped the list of best defenders with 82 tackle points.
In athletics, India won a record breaking 312 total medals and 174 golds in the 2019 South Asian Games. Swimmer Divya Satija, weightlifter Siddhant Gogoi and triple jumper Karthik Unnikrishnan were among the gold medal winners.
At the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in September, Arathi Arun secured 5 gold in the 72 kg M1 category. Para athlete Anandan Gunasekaran and Javelin Thrower Shivpal Singh won a gold each at the 2019 CISM World Military Games. Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge became the first ever person in history to run a marathon in under two hours, clocking a time of 1hr 59min 40.2 sec.
