The Sports and Rights Alliance (SRA) has called upon the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to conduct an independent investigation into sexual harassment allegations within India’s Wrestling Federation (WFI). The focus centres on the tenure of former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

SRA’s investigatin against WFI’s former President

Last year, several Indian wrestlers protested, demanding criminal charges against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Singh, who was also a federal lawmaker, faced accusations of sexually harassing six female wrestlers during his time in office. The case garnered international attention and raised concerns about the safety of women athletes in India.

The SRA’s report emphasizes the need for a comprehensive, independent, and trauma-informed investigation into Singh’s alleged abuse during his WFI presidency. Additionally, the SRA urges the IOC to investigate other claims of abuse by federation officials, coaches, and staff. The report highlights threats and harassment directed at reporting athletes by Singh and his allies.

The SRA recommends that the IOC revamp its “Integrity and Compliance Hotline,” ensuring it is accessible, trauma-informed, responsive, and free from conflicts of interest. This hotline serves as the primary channel for reporting athlete abuse.

While India has expressed interest in bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games, the SRA urges the IOC to rigorously assess any bid from the country. The report emphasizes the need for significant human rights improvements, including reformed governance, women in leadership, safeguarding systems, and freedom of expression for Indian athletes.

SRA’s call for action seeks accountability, transparency, and safety within India’s wrestling community, urging the IOC to play a pivotal role in addressing these critical issues.
