Sporting Club Bengaluru (SCB), also known as the Golden Tigers, has made a historic leap in Indian football by securing promotion to the I-League after a triumphant campaign in the I-League 2.

Formed as recently as 2022, SCB’s journey to the top tier of Indian football has been nothing short of a fairy tale. Their success story began with a title-winning campaign in the 2022-23 Bangalore Super Division, their debut season in the league. This victory paved the way for their participation in the 2023-24 I-League 3.

Sporting Club Bengaluru’s journey in the I-League 2

In the I-League 3, Sporting Club Bengaluru topped Group D, edging out Diamond Harbour FC on goal difference to qualify for the playoffs. They finished in the top three alongside Dempo SC and Sporting Clube de Goa, earning a spot in the I-League 2.

The Golden Tigers’ performance in the I-League 2 was dominant and unrivalled. They were crowned champions with two rounds to spare, defeating Sudeva Delhi FC 1-0 at the Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. This victory took their tally to 27 points from 12 matches.

Their home form was impeccable, winning all seven of their matches at the Bangalore Football Stadium. They scored the highest number of goals (23) in the eight-team league and boasted the joint-best defence, conceding only 12 goals.

This achievement came after a rough start to the season, with losses to United SC and Dempo in their first three games. However, Chandrashekar Rao Chinta’s side bounced back to win seven games in a row. A narrow win over Sudeva Delhi, thanks to Shaiborlang Kharpan’s first-half strike, sealed the title in SCB’s favour.

With this promotion, SCB will become the first team to represent the city in the I-League since Bengaluru FC in 2016-17.
