Sri Lankan cricketer Kusal Mendis was arrested by the police following a road accident which resulted in the death of a 64-year-old man.
Mendis’ SUV, which is currently under the custody of the police allegedly hit a bicycle at around 5 AM in the Horethuduwa area in Panadura, south of Colombo. The victim was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
The player will now appear in front of a magistrate in the next 48-hours following a medical examination by a doctor. There has been no statement from the 25-year-old player regarding the incident.
The North Police have confirmed that the deceased victim was a native of the Gorakapola area in Panadura. A spokesperson for the North Police SSP Jaliya Senaratne confirmed the arrest of the cricketer and made a subsequent statement. The statement had no mention of whether alcohol was involved or not.
Mendis was allowed to legally venture out as the coronavirus lockdown restrictions have now been eased in the island nation. The batsman was a part of the residential training camp at Pallekele, which ended on Wednesday.
This is not the first instance in Sr Lankan cricket that a player has been involved in a fatal car crash. Former spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi served a four-year jail sentence after crashing his car in 2003 onto a woman which resulted in her death.
