Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) and a former captain, recently explained his involvement in the much-discussed period of time when Virat Kohli resigned as T20I captain and was later stripped of the position in the ODI team. Ganguly was the BCCI President at the time, and Kohli had voiced his displeasure in December 2021 following his dismissal as the team’s captain.
There was controversy surrounding the events that led to Virat Kohli’s dismissal as the captain of the Indian cricket team and his explosive press conference prior to a tour of South Africa in December and January of 2021–2022.
According to Kohli, there was little communication and a sudden decision by the BCCI to remove him from the ODI captaincy. Kohli disclosed in a dramatic press conference that he received the news about the decision only ninety minutes prior to the team selection for the tour of South Africa.
He refuted Ganguly’s assertions that he was asked by the board to continue serving as the T20I captain. According to Kohli, there was never a request of any kind, and he had made it known that he will give up the T20I captaincy after the World Cup.
Sourav Ganguly, in a recent show on television, recalled the phase and said he did not influence the sacking of Kohli as ODI captain.
“I didn’t remove Virat from captaincy. I have said this several times. He (Kohli) was not interested to lead in T20Is. So, after he made that decision, I told him, if you’re not interested to lead in T20Is, it’s better if you step down from entire white-ball cricket. Let there be a white-ball captain and a red-ball captain.” Ganguly said, reacting to a video in a television show, Dadagiri Unlimited Season 10.
