We want him fit for Australia: BCCI prez Sourav Ganguly speaks up on the Rohit Sharma dilemma

The BCCI has announced the squad for the upcoming series against Australia recently. While the squad announcement was not a surprise but the absence of Rohit Sharma was certainly a big surprise. He hasn’t been included in the initial India T20I, ODI and Test squads as he sustained an injury. However, things became worse when Mumbai Indians shared some images of him where he can be seen practising in the nets without much discomfort as well.

Meanwhile, in a recent interview to Hindustan Times, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has opened up about Rohit Sharma’s chances to be featured in the Indian side for the important series against Australia. Ganguly said that the selectors will take a call again if the limited-overs vice-captain proves his fitness.

“With Rohit, we want him fit for Australia. At some stage if he is fit, I am sure the selectors will rethink his position,” Ganguly told Hindustan Times.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma didn’t feature for Mumbai Indians since the double super over match against Kings XI Punjab last month in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a hamstring injury. In his absence, Kieron Pollard has been captaining Mumbai in the last few matches of the league stage but he is likely to be featured in the payoffs.

While Ganguly was asked if Rohit Sharma should be advised not to play, Ganguly replied by saying: “We haven’t seen him playing.”

Apart from Rohit, Ishant Sharma has also been dropped from the Indian Test side as he also sustained an injury. Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly confirmed that if they become fit before the series, they will be added to the squad too. However, Rohit is currently working on his fitness with the Mumbai squad in UAE whereas Ishant has been undergoing rehab in India.

“We are monitoring Ishant and Rohit. Ishant is not completely out. He will become a part of the Test series,” he said. “They can be sent later. There are flights to Australia.”

While speaking about India’s chances in the Australia tour, the former India captain assured that this Indian team can defeat any team and they will carry forward their swashbuckling form as well.

“Australia in Australia is always tough. They will be a lot stronger with (Steve) Smith and (David) Warner back. Players like (Marnus) Labuschagne have become better,” Ganguly concluded. “It will be a good test for India, but they are capable of winning. It will be a good series.”
